Language & currency

The language spoken in Austria is German. The German as used in Austria strongly resembles the German as used in Southern Germany. The differences are often exaggerated and are considerably less than the linguistic divergence of Germany’s North. There is a number of minority languages which  are spoken in Austria and  some of which have official status. Turkish is the largest minority language and Serbian is the second largest minority language. Croatian, Slovenian and Hungarian are official languages in certain provinces of Austria.

As a member of the European Union, Austria is also part of the Economic and Monetary Union – which introduced the EURO as the common currency.

The following Euro-banknotes and coins are in circulation:

  • Banknotes with face-values of € 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500;
  • Coins of € 1 and 2 denominations as well as 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents.

These Euro banknotes and coins are the legal tender in all countries of the Eurozone. Apart from these, there are several gold and commemorative Euro coins issued by the Austrian Mint, which, however, are legal tender only in Austria.
